Violence against women remains a serious problem in Pakistan. It is estimated that between 70 and 90 percent of women in Pakistan have suffered some form of abuse. Honour killings, domestic violence, acid burning and forced marriages are still prevalent in all areas of the country.

Domestic abuse is possibly one of the most common forms of violence against women. This is because in most marriages, women are supposed to be subservient to their husbands. Men, out of frustration, stress or whatever reason, resort to beating their wives since they can get away with it. Few laws that make this issue a serious offence exist and even in cases they do, investigation is hardly conducted thoroughly. The government of Pakistan needs to handle violence against women more seriously as it destroys young girls and women in ways more than one. The assemblies should pass bills regarding the security of women and NGOs and women’s rights centres should be more active in creating awareness about the issue and offering help to women who have been victimised.
