The Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested an alleged militant belonging to the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and seized two suicide jackets and weapons on Monday.
The militant was wanted on terrorism charges, including the killing of four policemen and two female polio workers.
SSP Mohammad Aslam Khan said AEC personnel were going to Ittehad Town to raid a hideout when they came under attack from TTP militants near Abu Huraira Masjid. The police returned the fire, and arrested Asad Ali alias Bahijan alias Rafiullah.
However, his associates fled under the cover of fire. During a search of the hideout, the police found two ready-to-use suicide jackets, two hand grenades and a 9mm pistol with bullets.
During the initial interrogation, the suspect said he belonged to the TTP’s Fazalullah Group of Karachi and trained in preparing improvised explosive devices and other bombs in Waziristan. He also admitted to be the mastermind of two bomb blasts in Landhi and other terrorist attacks in the city.
Rafiullah confessed to his involvement in the twin blast that occurred in the Quaidabad police remit earlier this year. He said they had planned to kill the SHO and the SDPO of Quiadabad, for which he had prepared two IEDs and planted them near a garbage dump. He further disclosed that the first bomb weighed about one kilogram, and the second had a weight of three kilograms.
According to their plan, militants exploded the low-intensity bomb first, and when the SHO and SDPO visited the scene they detonated the bigger one, killing DSP Kamal Khan Mangan and ASI Nasir, and wounding SHO Quaidabad Amanullah Marwat, SI Akber Hussain, and head constable Nasir and Pervez Iqbal among other people.
He said that after a TTP commander had ordered him to generate funds for the outfit, he along with his accomplices attacked a cash van of Pakistan Post in the Banaras area, looted Rs400,000, killed two police constables PC Rizwan and PC Naeem and took away the official SMGs of the constables.
The militant also confessed murdering female polio workers Fehmida, wife of Zahid Shah, and Madiha, wife of Ataullah, in Gulshan-e-Bunair in the Quaidabad police remit on December 18 last year. He said he also killed a man, Fazal Mohammad, on March 20 this year on suspicion that he was a police informer.
