?Waseem needs funds to have title bout staged in Korea?

KARACHI: World Boxing Council (WBC) two-time world silver flyweight champion Mohammad Waseem’s promoter Andy Kim is making hectic efforts to organise the world title bout for the Pakistani boxer in South Korea but he is facing a huge sponsorship problem. If he fails to meet the required financial demand then Waseem will have to play in his rival’s country and this may create problems for the Quetta-born fighter to secure his first world crown. “I will need the funds so that I will be able to host the world title bout in Korea, our own territory. Otherwise, we may get the title shot but have to go to Japan which means he is likely to lose by hometown decision,” Kim told ‘The News’. The world No 1 Waseem is expected to meet in the world title fight against the knock-out artist and Japan’s most accomplished 22-year old boxer Daigo Higa, reigning flyweight world champion. He is the most dangerous fighter in his class, having won all his 13 bouts he has played so far through knock-outs. In the WBC convention in October, Kim would formally file a request for the title shot of Waseem against Higa. When asked how much sponsorship he has managed so far he said: “I have got no sponsors and we will need funds more than we needed last time because world title fight is very expensive. I am worried as Japanese have a lot of money. Higa is their hero just like Waseem,” Kim feared. [Read More…]

Former interior minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar said on Friday that Nawaz Sharif had been stripped of the prime minister’s seat but nobody could deprive him of his right to lead the party. He added that he would reveal his reasons for not becoming part of the new federal cabinet in a few days. His remarks came a few hours after President Mamnoon administered oath to 48 members of the new federal cabinet. “Nawaz Sharif is no longer the PM, but he’ll remain the party leader and under his supervision, the PML-N will continue to grow stronger,” he said while addressing a a public gathering in Rawat. Nisar goes public with grievances against PML-N “If you really support a leader, you should tell him the truth, which I have been doing irrespective of the outcome,” he maintained. “A man’s strength lies in his character, not his designation.” Nisar said the politics of mudslinging was rampant nowadays despite the crisis the country was facing. “Distinguishing between the truth and the lies has become difficult,” he added. The former minister said the PML-N and the country needed to be pulled out from the ongoing crisis. “The culture of flattery has destroyed governments in the country and must be brought to an end,” he remarked. Nisar said the PML-N’s rivals had ruled the country for eight years but could not execute a single mega project. “The country embarked on new roads of development time and again under the PML-N government.” Addressing a news conference just [Read More…]

An old debate

Another terror attack has struck Lahore, causing death and injuries. As usual, statements pour in from state functionaries condemning the incident and sympathising with the victims. In the midst of such a tragedy and when the nation is in the grip of the Panama fever, the prime minister has decided to go to Maldives. Can the rulers be more insensitive?  The Panama issue surfaced 15 months ago and there has been a long wait, while the government remains at a standstill.  Meanwhile, the economy is in tatters and continues to slide downward. The IMF, in its recent report, has already raised alarm bells. Are these not the signs of a failed state? If this is the democratic system we aspired for and if this is the outdated judicial system that cannot deliver, it is better we have none. A technocrat government is inescapable at this juncture to take the nation out of the woods. Time is running out. Shoaib (Karachi) Click for detailed story

PML-N leaders go all out to placate citizens about loadshedding — with Tweets

With megacities suffering blackouts and crippling loadshedding, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) is focusing its energy on placating citizens irked about the power crisis through a social media campaign. On Thursday morning, Federal Defense Minister Khawaja Asif took to Twitter to announce that the government had brought unscheduled load-shedding down to 'nil'. Ironically, Asif in April had made an announcement that the current power crisis will see its end in the "next eight to ten days". Asif's tweets in the last 24 hours also contained data about the country's power generation for the day. "Highest ever generation recorded at 3:00pm today 17May, 2017," read one tweet. While some social media users welcomed the updates and information, several used the tweets as an opportunity to troll PML-N leaders, with responses ranging from appreciation to all out abuse.Last month, the daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz posted a clip of a "live dashboard" which she said record power generation. Earlier, she had asked her 3.2 million Twitter followers to share the status of power outages in their districts. The tweet quickly became fodder for angry users, resulting in the hashtag 'MaryamLightChaliGai', which people used to tag Maryam in their complaints. The online strategy comes as reports state that the prime minister is seriously concerned about how power outages will affect his election campaign in the run up to 2018.A day before the Panama case verdict, the premier held a special meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy — second [Read More…]
