Afghans annex Intercontinental Cup with huge win

DUBAI: A massive 10-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates helped Afghanistan clinch the Intercontinental Cup on Saturday. In the seventh and final round, Afghanistan posted a huge total of 510/9 in their first innings with three out of their top four batsmen registering centuries.Their bowlers backed up that performance by skittling out UAE for 197 in the first innings as Rashid Khan and Zahir Khan picked up three wickets each. After being asked to follow on, UAE put up a much-improved display initially and were 236/3 at one stage. Soon after, Rashid led a collapse as his five-wicket haul ensured the next seven wickets fell for just the addition of 95 runs, which tilted the game in Afghanistan’s favour.Ireland vs Scotland, Dubai: Ireland registered a comprehensive win over Scotland in Dubai but still had to settle for the second spot with 109 points, 12 short of Afghanistan. In a low-scoring encounter, Kevin O’Brien’s unbeaten 78 in the first innings proved to be vital for Ireland as they recovered from 124/6 to finish with 251. In reply, despite the openers adding 55 for the opening wicket, Scotland surrendered meekly to post only 141 as O’Brien starred with the ball as well with three wickets.
