Yearly movement of export-bound containers at the Faisalabad Dry Port has dropped from 25,641 containers in 2007-08 to only 4,478 containers in 2012-13, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Vice Chairman Syed Zia Alamdar Hussain told interim Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Sohail Wajahat and the Minister for Water and Power Mussadiq Malik in a meeting on Saturday.
The ministers were informed that Faisalabad’s industry and the textile and garments sector in particular had been severely affected due to the energy crisis. Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) had announced five days of gas supply per week to Punjab’s industries last year, which has been further curtailed to only three days a week for this year.
The meeting concluded on assurances by both ministers that gas and electricity supply would be increased with immediate effect.
