The KP government took a commendable step when it passed a legislation barring a groom’s family to demand dowry from the bride’s family. Nowadays, the budget of one event amounts to Rs1 million. The marriage expenses of the elite class are significantly high. The orthodox practice of making dowry payments to a groom’s family has turned marriage ceremonies into a financial burden. At times, a groom’s family does not only ask for gift in kind but in cash as well. All in all, the family of a bride faces immense pressure while meeting all ‘demands’.
Not everyone can afford a lavish wedding. It is praiseworthy that some people have taken an initiative against the wrong prevailing practices of society. The timely implementation of the proposed bill will go a long way. Other provinces should follow suit to get rid of such social problems.
