KARACHI: Majority of the areas in Karachi plunged into darkness after heavy rains and thunderstorm caused more than 200 feeders to trip.
Saddar, Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Sohrab Goth, Keamari, Korangi and Landhi were among the areas badly hit by power breakdowns.
“Rainwater has entered my home. There is no light. K-Electric officials are not attending my calls,” said a resident of Federal B Area.
The inundated roads and streets stood contrary to the government’s claims to improve the drainage system.
One of the biggest markets of sacrificial animals located at Sohrab Goth suffered a major blow as many tents collapsed because of heavy rains and people intending to buy sacrificial animals could not make it to the market as the roads were inundated.
“The sanitation system has collapsed in the city as the storm drains have been encroached upon. How can one expect tangible results,” said Dr Zakir Qaimkhani who lives in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, adding that after the rains the weather turns pleasant, but it worries the citizens as they cannot come out of their homes.
The thunderstorm caused many vehicles to get stuck on the main roads, while one woman was electrocuted.
