Mental health is as important as physical health. People overlook mental health although it is a significant aspect of good health. Mental health includes emotional, psychological and social well-being and has an undeviating influence on how one thinks, feels and acts.
The topic of mental health is usually dismissed due to the perceived notion that people with mental illnesses are violent, look different from others and can never be a productive part of society. These stereotypes aggravate the misery of people who are already suffering from mental illnesses. According to the chairperson of the department of psychiatry at Aga Khan University, Dr Ayesha Mian, “Around 50 million people are suffering from mental disorders in Pakistan”. We can help people who are suffering from mental disorders by accepting their health condition and by giving them emotional, psychological and social support. It is only when people feel they are understood do they gather courage and motivation to talk about their mental problems and ask for help.
