The head of a newly-registered political party, Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA), Maulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi was invited as a guest in a show aired on a private channel. During the interview, Rizvi was questioned about his source of income. The leader of the TLYRA answered that his source of income is the gifts he received from people. He took out a thick bundle of cash to show it on TV and claimed that a single person had just gifted him a sum of Rs100,000.
Under Article 39(3) of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, an amount of cash gift received from an individual otherwise than through a banking channel is taxable under the head ‘Income from Other Sources.’ I wonder if the FBR would issue a notice to the party leader asking him to pay taxes on the amount of gifts received in prior years and declared in his tax returns, if he has ever filed one.
