A Somali immigrant who injured 11 people in a car and knife attack at Ohio State University may have been inspired by Islamic State and the late al Qaeda-linked cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, an FBI official said on Wednesday. The Islamic State militant group on Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack at the Columbus campus. The US-born al-Awlaki was killed by a US drone strike in 2011. Ohio campus attacker identified as Muslim student angry at US interference The Ohio State attacker, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a 20-year-old Muslim student at the school and a lawful permanent resident of the United States, plowed into pedestrians with a car and sprung from the vehicle to stab other victims on Monday. A police officer quickly ended the attack by fatally shooting Artan, officials said. “At this time we are not aware of anyone else being involved in the planning of this attack, but the investigation continues,” Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Angela Byers told reporters. “It appears that Artan may have at least been inspired by Anwar Awlaki and the Islamic State in the Levant and we will continue to pursue this as part of the investigation,” she said. At the time of his death, al-Awlaki was identified by US intelligence as “chief of external operations” for al Qaeda’s Yemen branch and a web-savvy propagandist for militants. A version of Shamoon, the destructive computer virus that four years ago crippled tens of thousands of computers at Middle Eastern energy companies, was used two weeks ago to attack computers in Saudi Arabia, according to US security firms. CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks Inc and Symantec Corp. warned of the new attacks on Wednesday. They did not name any victims of the new version of Shamoon, which cripples computers by wiping their master boot records that they use to start up. They also did not say how much damage had been caused or identify the hackers. Disgruntled gamer ‘likely’ behind October US hacking: expert The reappearance of Shamoon is significant as there have only been a handful of other high-profile attacks involving disk-wiping malware, including ones in 2014 on Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corp. and Sony Corp’s Hollywood studio. Governments and businesses pay close attention to such cases because it can be time-consuming and extremely expensive to restore infected systems. The original Shamoon hackers left images of a burning US flag on machines at Saudi Aramco and RasGas Co Ltd in 2012. Researchers said the Shamoon 2 hackers also left a calling card: a disturbing image of the body of three year-old Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi, who drowned in the Mediterranean last year. The 2012 Shamoon attacks were likely conducted by hackers working on behalf of the Iranian government, said CrowdStrike Chief Technology Office Dmitri Alperovitch. It is too early to say whether the same group was behind Shamoon [Read More…]

Ibra, Martial see Man Utd through, Arsenal crash

MANCHESTER: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial scored twice as Manchester United crushed West Ham United 4-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, while Arsenal was humbled by Southampton. United manager Jose Mourinho served a one-game touchline ban after his dismissal for kicking a water bottle during Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw against West Ham, but his absence had no ill-effects. Ibrahimovic put United ahead in the second minute and although Ashley Fletcher equalised, Martial’s second-half brace restored the hosts’ control before the Swede added a fourth goal in added time. “After the West Ham goal, we had 10 minutes where we felt it deeply. West Ham’s first shot, they equalise,” said Mourinho, who has overseen United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1989. “But in the second half, we got the confidence to play and play beautiful, attacking football. “Goals plus performance means the real happiness.” United will play Hull City in the two-legged semi-finals, while Southampton’s reward for winning 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium was a last-four encounter with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. The game at Old Trafford notably saw Bastian Schweinsteiger make his first appearance of the season for United as a late substitute. The former Germany captain has only recently returned to the first-team squad after being frozen out by Mourinho and received a huge ovation as he came on. West Ham had needed less than two minutes to take the lead in Sunday’s game, but on this occasion, United were the early birds. Wayne Rooney’s [Read More…]

Zidane's son scores on debut in Real Cup rout

MADRID: Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane’s son, Enzo, scored on his senior debut as the European champions brushed aside the third tier Cultural Leonesa 6-1 to progress into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey 13-2 on aggregate on Wednesday. Enzo, the oldest of Zidane’s four sons, all of whom play at different levels in Real’s youth teams, was introduced by his father, a legendary former player for Real and France, at half-time. The 21-year-old, who was previously coached by Zinedine at Real’s youth side Castilla before he took the top job at the Santiago Bernabeu in January, showed a glimpse of his father’s talent with a fine low finish from the edge of the area just after the hour mark. “If I take off my hat as a coach then I am happy for him as a father (too),” said Zidane. “But, in saying that, I watch what he does on the field as a coach and I am happy with how they all played.” With the tie over as a contest following Real’s 7-1 first leg win and El Clasico away to Barcelona to come on Saturday, Zidane made nine changes from the side that started the 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon last weekend. Norwegian starlet Martin Odegaard, 17, was also handed his full debut, but it was Dominican international Mariano Diaz who got Real off to a flying start as he slotted home the first of his hat-trick after just 23 seconds. James Rodriguez headed home [Read More…]
