A troubling news report highlighted the apathy shown by the Mithi Civil Hospital following the death of a child at their facility. According to the report, the hospital administration allegedly refused to provide an ambulance for the deceased child’s parents to take his body home to perform his last rites as they were unable to incur charges worth Rs5,000 to avail the facility. The parents were already in a state of shock and hospital administration’s approach to the issue had rubbed salt into their wound. The administration should have realised that if the parents had enough money, they wouldn’t have admitted their child at a government hospital.
Sindh’s government hospitals need to be revamped as they are in a deplorable condition. Most hospitals lack medicines, beds, doctors and ambulances facilities. There is a pressing need to take action against hospital administrations that cannot assist people in the right way. Efforts need to be made to improve the condition of government hospitals so as to facilitate the poor.
