This refers to the news report ‘Pakistan gradually becoming stable, prosperous’ (Mar 10). I went through the Oxford dictionary to understand what the terms ‘stable’ and ‘prosperous’ mean from an economic perspective. I fail to understand how a country with a perpetual budget deficit, continuous fall in exports (the current figure stands at 45 percent of all our imports), decreasing remittances, mounting debt burden – reaching 65 percent of the GDP, stagnant agriculture and industrial sectors, 25 million out-of-school children, non-availability of clean drinking water, absence of healthcare facilities, high unemployment rate, rising poverty and increasing inequality, can be termed economically ‘stable’ and ‘prosperous’.

We are in an economic mess and the prevailing situation in the country is actually the antithesis of stability and prosperity.
