US President Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has undermined the aspirations of Palestinians. This announcement violates international law and reflects a blatant breach of resolutions 242 and 338 of the UN Security Council.” Since 1995, all US presidents have shunned any attempts to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital as they were aware of the gravity of this decision and its possible repercussions. As a result, Trump’s decision deviates from America’s longstanding position.
It is not surprising that the US president has taken such a vastly unpopular step. Over the past year, he has successfully pulled out of a climate change agreement and introduced a cluster of policies that have earned the ire of people across the world. At this juncture, world leaders – especially those at the helm of the UN Security Council – should take pragmatic steps against these irresponsible moves.
